The number of pixels in an image determines the size it can be used for various uses. Screen use does not demand a great number of pixels standard computer screens are often set to x pixels or more commonly now x pixels for the whole screen area. Commercial print, however, requires images to have a lot of pixels if they are to be printed at any decent size e.

If an image is too small for the intended size and just scaled up in the design software, the printed result will be 'pixelated' with the pixel blocks showing and with jaggy edges to elements in the image. Right click on the image file wherever you have stored it and select Properties. The size we can print successfully is a correlation between the number of pixels and method of printing.

What determines the final possible output size is the dpi dots per inch required by the print method. You don't need to know how this works, just to be able to enter the correct output dpi in the calculator below.

Are you sending us images we can use? The size at which we can use an image depends on what it is intended for - screen visual or print. We can often tell suitability from file size but this only works with tif, bmp and eps files.

Jpg, gif and png are all file types that have been compressed down and the amount of compression can be varied according to the program default or the userso the filesize is no clear indication of what the expanded size will be. Convert Pixels to Inches Easily With This Image Size Calculator

Many 1-hour photo lab digital machines are usually set to print at up to pixels per inch, but it won't hurt to always provide pixels to print dpi. FWIW, I'm old school, and I learned the term for printing resolution as "dpi", so that's second nature to me, it has simply always been the name of it.

Some do call it ppi now, same thing, pixels per inch. Printers do have their own other thing about ink drops per inch which is about quality of printing, not about image resolutionbut here, we're speaking about printing resolution of image pixels.

First concerns first, Things to be sure you know There are two situations when printing images, depending on print shops or home printing. The photo printing shops where we order prints will offer a paper size, and will fill that paper with your image will ignore your dpi number already in the image file, and will recompute their own necessary "pixels per inch" value, to scale your image to their paper size.

If you order 8x10 inches, you will get 8x10 print size. Planning ahead to crop image to match paper shape, and to provide enough pixels so that the result will be to pixels per inch is a very good plan.

The dpi number that your digital camera initially stores in the file is far from meaningful, it is just some arbitrary number, which will print SOME size, but not likely to be your own printing goal. Hopefully, you have already properly scaled the image for your selected paper size.

However, most photo editors will also provide an option to "Scale to fit media" or "Best fit to page", which will scale the image to fit the specified paper size similar to A above.
