The number of pixels in an image determines the size it can be used for various uses. Screen use does not demand a great number of pixels standard computer screens are often set to x pixels or more commonly now x pixels for the whole screen area. Commercial print, however, requires images to have a lot of pixels if they are to be printed at any decent size e.
If an image is too small for the intended size and just scaled up in the design software, the printed result will be 'pixelated' with the pixel blocks showing and with jaggy edges to elements in the image. Right click on the image file wherever you have stored it and select Properties. The size we can print successfully is a correlation between the number of pixels and method of printing.
What determines the final possible output size is the dpi dots per inch required by the print method. You don't need to know how this works, just to be able to enter the correct output dpi in the calculator below.
Are you sending us images we can use? The size at which we can use an image depends on what it is intended for - screen visual or print. We can often tell suitability from file size but this only works with tif, bmp and eps files.

Most books and magazines require ppi for photo quality. For example, the chart shows that you can make a 5" x 7" photo quality print from a 3 megapixel camera. Notice that as the print size doubles, the megapixels required increases geometrically. You can make nice 8" x 10" prints with a 6 or 8 megapixel camera, but to make a true photo quality 16" x 20" print, you need between 24 and 30 megapixels.
Don't be fooled by manufacturers' claims that say you can make 16" x 20" prints from an 8 megapixel camera. While you certainly can make a print that size, it will not be true photo quality.
Here's why:. Actual pixel dimensions vary from camera to camera. For an explanation of "pixels per inch" vs. On most Design pages you'll see the newest comments at the top. On this page however, I decided to show the oldest comments at the top because I tried to answer many of the initial comments about this chart. Since people keep making the same comments, I thought it best to have my original answers at the top. Once again, I made this chart as a visual representation of megapixels.
As a photographer, I certainly recognize the importance of sensor quality, optics, compression, post processing, and viewing distance. Robert Giordano.
Even though 7 is not on the chart it is not difficult to see where it would fit. I haven't tried anything larger than a 8x Nice chart, one of many reasons why I opted for the 7 megapixel camera over the 5! A 16x20 is 16x x 20xor 28, pixels This chart is only about the math and does not take into consideration the subject matter of the image, the media it will be printed on, the amount of post editing that will be done to it, or the viewing distance of the final output. And also the work done in post has more to do with achievable print size than megapixels.Refulgence savage guide
The dpi mark is indeed "true photo quality" in print terms, but it isn't always needed to get good prints. And perfect 20x30"s from the full-frame 4mp Canon 1D. A larger 6MP sensor will of course produce better images than a smaller 6MP sensor of the same type. From there, it gets very complicated. For one, making an inkjet print is different than producing a print ad where you need ppi for a line screen.
I've made great looking 16x20 inkjet prints from my 6MP Nikon D70 but the same image didn't quite cut it for a full page magazine ad. There are a number of factors to consider including subject matter, exposure, focus, and post processing.Use our free online Image Size Calculator to do your image size calculations simple and easy!
Sizing up your image in the wrong way could lead to images not fitting the use you have for them, or images that are unattractively stretched or squeezed. Digital images use pixels to display their content.
Each pixel is like a building block of an image; these building blocks are the base unit that make up what you see in a picture. This calculator is very useful for choosing just the right size to scale your image to.
Either enter a percentage that you wish to scale the image to, or enter the final size you wish your image to be in height, width, or both.
After submitting your figures, your calculations will display on the screen. If you entered a percentage, the new height or width will be displayed. If you entered a future height or width, the percentage needed to scale to that size will be displayed. This will result in pixellation if you scale it too large.
Some images may have the same number of pixels, but if the resolution is 72 DPI, it will print on paper much larger than if the resolution is Let's be honest - sometimes the best image size calculator is the one that is easy to use and doesn't require us to even know what the image size formula is in the first place! Around pixels per inch is an optimum and proper printing goal for photographs.
Convert Pixels to Inches Easily With This Image Size Calculator
Many 1-hour photo lab digital machines are usually set to print at up to pixels per inch, but it won't hurt to always provide pixels to print dpi. FWIW, I'm old school, and I learned the term for printing resolution as "dpi", so that's second nature to me, it has simply always been the name of it.
Some do call it ppi now, same thing, pixels per inch. Printers do have their own other thing about ink drops per inch which is about quality of printing, not about image resolutionbut here, we're speaking about printing resolution of image pixels.
First concerns first, Things to be sure you know There are two situations when printing images, depending on print shops or home printing. The photo printing shops where we order prints will offer a paper size, and will fill that paper with your image will ignore your dpi number already in the image file, and will recompute their own necessary "pixels per inch" value, to scale your image to their paper size.
If you order 8x10 inches, you will get 8x10 print size. Planning ahead to crop image to match paper shape, and to provide enough pixels so that the result will be to pixels per inch is a very good plan.
If your image dimensions are too large, the photo shop will first resample it to this smaller requested size. That's not necessarily a problem, except the too-large image will be slow to upload. Or, if too small insufficient pixels providedthe print quality will be lower, and the lab may refuse worst cases. But if the image shape does not match the paper shape, the excess image outside the paper edges simply disappears, results may not be what you expected.
If printing yourself at home, the Print menu in your photo editor normally does use the file's scaled image dpi number pixels per inch to size the images on paper. But it typically will also allow changing that dpi, called scaling to fit the paper size. The dpi number that your digital camera initially stores in the file is far from meaningful, it is just some arbitrary number, which will print SOME size, but not likely to be your own printing goal. Hopefully, you have already properly scaled the image for your selected paper size.
However, most photo editors will also provide an option to "Scale to fit media" or "Best fit to page", which will scale the image to fit the specified paper size similar to A above.
This can be borderless if so specified in the printer Properties. Please note: The highly advanced and sophisticated printing systems software we use is taken into consideration when formulating the method for determining max print sizes possible from digital photos described below. Not all print service providers will be able to match the results outlined since lesser quality print systems may be employed.
The pixel dimensions will be a number x a number. Once you know the pixel dimensions of your digital photo, all you need to do is divide each dimension by 60 to determine the max print size in inches.
Print sizes a little smaller, larger or even sizes will yield the same print quality results. This factor of 60 is actually a somewhat conservation value.
For digital photos of lower original pixel dimensions, about or less, the factor or 60 is a good number to use. For digital photos of higher original pixel dimensions, a factor of 50 or 55 could be used to determine max print sizes with the same quality results.
Determining what photo enlargement sizes a digital photo will produce is fairly easy. If you have a version of Photoshop or another image editing application.

Most commonly, screens have a DPI value of Here are resources for you to find, or calculate, the DPI of your device. Take a measuring tape against your screen to determine the width of the red line below in inches. Then, use the chart beneath the red line to convert that number into DPI.
Most screens have a DPI of What is DPI? DPI, which stands for dots-per-inch, is a measure used in printing to calculate the number of dots that can fit into a line with a width of one inch.
In computer terms, we use pixels instead of dots. If you know the pixel width and height of your image, our calculator will convert those dimensions into its display size in inches. This can be useful to know when printing a physical copy of the image or displaying it on a larger screen.
Whereas converting pixels to inches can be helpful in outputting a digital image to a physical image, converting inches to pixels can help you bring a physical image into digital form.
